SPAR Women’s Challenge Proves Better Together in Action with Jacaranda FM

Pretoria, 31 July 2017: Heart breaking tears of joy and relief was the reaction heard across Pretoria when struggling single mother, Rachel, was given the news that Jacaranda Good Morning Angels (GMA) would be lifting the burden she had been carrying for so long. SPAR Women’s Challenge & Good Morning Angels showed their support to this struggling, single mother on Wednesday 26 July. Rachel is a single mother working nine and half hour shifts as a barista in Braamfontein, Johannesburg to support her two sons, 8-year-old Lefa and 12-year-old Kgotatso who is autistic.

Karen van Heerden who gets her morning coffee from Rachel everyday brought Rachel’s situation to the Jacaranda Good Morning Angel’s attention. “Rachel has the most amazing smile and when you greet her in the morning, you will never know the struggle behind that smile,” said Karen during the Good Morning Angels broadcast. Karen explained that Rachel is struggling to support her children as she has no support system and as a result, now suffers from depression. She needs to pay rent and cover the school fees for Lefa’s schooling as well as fees for the Jiswa School for special needs in Lenasia that Kgotatso attends and take care of them on a barista’s salary.

During the interview Rachel revealed that just one week before the broadcast she has taken the incredibly brave step of leaving her partner who was mistreating her. “I packed up my things and found a room to rent. Although it’s small, it is better than being always being unhappy,” Rachel said. Unfortunately this means that Rachel now has to make ends meet on her own.

Jacaranda Good Morning Angels stepped in and, thanks to the help of several sponsors, generously offered to cover Rachel’s rent and the school fess for both children for the rest of the year. To make sure that Rachel has everything she needs, the SPAR Women’s Challenge then added a year’s worth of groceries to the donation. “We at SPAR believe in being better together and so from SPAR and from every lady that walks in the SPAR Women’s Challenge race and so I would like to give you a year’s worth of groceries to the value of R24 000,” SPAR’s Retha Ingenbleek was excited to tell Rachel.

Once again, SPAR has proven that we are better together and that by uniting, we can truly help those in need. Thanks to every woman who has entered this year’s Pretoria SPAR Women’s Challenge, Rachel is now on the road to independence.

The Pretoria SPAR Women’s Challenge takes place on 5 August 2017 at SuperSport Stadium in Centurion. Entries are still available at the SPAR stand at the main entrance of SuperSport Park Stadium from 10:00 to 18:00 daily until Friday 4 August.
